Everton defender Phil Jagielka insists that he will not relinquish his first-team spot.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka has insisted that he will not be forced out of his position in the first team.

The 35-year-old has been selected in the first XI by Sam Allardyce for the last two games, both of which the team have won.

Jagielka stepped into the role due to Ashley Williams's suspension, and now he plans to keep hold of it.

"I've always got confidence in my own ability, it's just about getting those chances and getting to play," Jagielka told the club's official website.

"I understand football, when people look at your age sometimes people think you need more of a rest than you do, sometimes you pick up those injuries and they last a little bit longer.

"I understand the way it works but as I say I'm not giving up on my position, on a starting role. I'm really proud to walk out as captain, and to walk off as a victorious captain. There's plenty of life left in me."

Everton's next game is against Manchester City at Goodison Park on Saturday.
