Maarten Stekelenburg signs a new two-year contract at Everton, despite being pushed down the pecking order by Jordan Pickford last season.

Everton have announced that goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has signed a new contract with the club that runs through until the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

The 35-year-old failed to make a single Premier League appearance for the Toffees last season following the summer arrival of Jordan Pickford.

Stekelenburg is happy to have extended his stay at Goodison Park by a further two years, however, and the experienced Dutchman now hopes to help Pickford - England's number one at the World Cup finals - push on once he returns from his extended rest.

"Jordan had a very good 2017-18 season and played superbly as well for England at the World Cup," he told Everton's official website. "I understand my role and I will try to compete with Jordan and push him to continue to get better as well.

"For me, it was tough last year because I had an injury and it took me a few months to come back from that. But I'm fit now, I've played in our pre-season games and I'm very much looking forward to Jordan getting back here so we can push one another."

Everton also have Mateusz Hewelt on their goalkeeping books, with Joel Robles recently departing for Real Betis.
