Inflatable banana thrown towards pitch in Feyenoord-Roma game

An inflatable banana is thrown onto the pitch during Feyenoord's Europa league round-of-32 second-leg game against Roma.

The Europa League last-32 second-leg clash between Feyenoord and Roma, which finished 2-1 to the Italians, was suspended on several occasions after several objects - including an inflatable banana - were thrown onto the pitch.

Play was momentarily stopped at De Kuip not long before half time when the referee retrieved the offending item from the pitch after it appeared to have been tossed the way of Gervinho.

Adem Ljajic scored in first-half added time at the back post to put Roma in the lead, but in the second half, the decision to send Mitchell te Vrede off for a challenge on Kostas Manolas led to more crowd unrest.

The referee then suspended the action for around 15 minutes as the players were taken off the field following more objects raining onto the pitch.

After the action resumed, Elvis Manu pulled Feyenoord level, but the hosts went down to nine men following Erwin Mulder's red card in the 57th minute.

Ultimately, the Serie A side would proceed to the last 16 of the competition after Gervinho netted the winner on the hour to give them a 3-2 win on aggregate.

There was also unrest in the first leg of the tie as scores of Feyenoord fans clashed with Italian police in Rome last week.
