Late Jeff Hughes header downs wasteful Yeovil Town

Jeff Hughes scores an 86th-minute winner in a smash-and-grab victory for Fleetwood Town away to Yeovil Town.

Jeff Hughes struck an 86th-minute winner as Fleetwood Town rode their luck to snatch a 1-0 win away to a wasteful Yeovil Town this afternoon.

Gary Johnson's side dominated the encounter, but the hosts paid the price for a series of missed opportunities when Hughes planted a firm header past Jed Steer with four minutes remaining.

Yeovil came into the clash with just one home win all season, but Johnson's side made inroads toward improving that dismal record early on.

The hosts came within the width of the post from moving ahead, with AJ Leitch-Smith heading against the woodwork after eight minutes.

Jordi Hiwula was rewarded with a starting berth after firing the Glovers into the second round of the FA Cup last week, and he nearly vindicated Johnson's decision.

The Manchester City loanee forced Chris Maxwell into a smart finger-tip save on 17 minutes as Yeovil continued to threaten an opening goal. It was Hiwula again on the half-hour mark, but he perhaps should have scored this time after losing the battle of wits with Maxwell in a one-on-one.

Having single-handedly kept Fleetwood in the game, Maxwell continued his heroics between the sticks to deny Leitch-Smith and earn the visitors a half-time draw.

Hiwula continued to look a live wire early in the second half, and did find the net on 50 minutes but his strike was correctly disallowed for offside.

Yeovil - second from bottom in League One - continued to dominate but lacked a ruthlessness to convert their chances, with James Berrett wasting arguably the chance of the game by lashing a volley wide from close range.

Maxwell was forced into further heroics with 10 minutes remaining, palming away Leitch-Smith's curling effort as the Glovers looked fresh out of ideas against the inspired goalkeeper.

The hosts were punished for their profligacy four minutes from the end, however, as Hughes leapt highest to fire a bullet header past Steer and propel Fleetwood up to 10th in the table.
