Fatih Terim apologises to the Galatasaray fans after his side were smashed 6-1 by Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Galatasaray manager Fatih Terim has issued an apology to his club's fans for their "terrible" loss against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The Turkish champions were battered 6-1 at the Turk Telekom Arena by the La Liga giants in their opening match of the new Champions League campaign.

Having trailed just 1-0 at the break, Terim feels that his players gave up after Madrid doubled their lead.

"There is not much to say after a defeat like that but we lost the game in a terrible way," Terim told reporters. "Madrid didn't have a chance in the first half, whereas we had three or four. We suddenly conceded goals without any apparent reason.

"We started the second half well but following a dreadful mistake the score became 2-0.

"After that my players gave up the game because both physically and in terms of morale you can't fight against the situation."

Cristiano Ronaldo netted a hat-trick for Madrid with a Karim Benzema brace and an Isco opener completing the rout.
