Genoa go down to Catania at home

Gonzalo Bergessio and Pablo Barrientos score for Catania as they defeat Genoa 2-0 away from home in Serie A.

Genoa remain in the relegation zone in Serie A after losing 2-0 to Catania at home.

The home side had the first chance of the game when Marco Borriello's header from Ruben Olivera's cross went just wide in the very first minute.

Three minutes later Catania went ahead, Gonzalo Bergessio latching on to Alejandro Gomez's pass to shoot home from close range.

Borriello could have equalised just minutes later when he was set up by a Ciro Immobile cross in a very good position, but the Italian striker failed to make the most of his opportunity.

Genoa continued to have the better of the chances for the rest of the first half, with Francesco Matuzalem, Borriello, Thomas Manfredini and Juraj Kucka all creating problems for the Catania defence.

The pattern continued in the second half, as Immobile and Luca Antonelli had chances for the home side in quick succession in the opening three minutes.

However, Catania gradually got themselves back into the contest and wrapped up the points on 86 minutes, Pablo Barrientos firing in from the right side of the box.
