Huddersfield Town defender Tommy Smith in stable condition

Huddersfield Town announce that defender Tommy Smith is in a stable condition in hospital after sustaining a head injury in the defeat to Leeds United.

Huddersfield Town have confirmed that defender Tommy Smith is in a stable condition in hospital after suffering a head injury in his side's defeat to Leeds United on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the build-up to Billy Sharp's winning goal, as Smith collided with keeper Joe Murphy as he attempted to keep the ball from going into the net.

The 22-year-old was treated on the field, but was then airlifted to hospital due to concerns over his condition.

Smith is now in a stable condition, although he will remain in hospital for observation.

The club said in a statement: "Tommy became unconscious in the incident late in the game and was stretchered off after a lengthy period of treatment on the pitch.

"In the medical room his condition caused increased concern and after the full-time whistle, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) was called. The YAA landed on the pitch at the John Smith's Stadium and Tommy was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary.

"Tommy has subsequently undergone scans and tests and is now in a stable condition. We are pleased to report Tommy has been sitting up and talking to members of Huddersfield Town's staff who have visited him on Saturday evening."

Smith has made 27 appearances in all competitions for the Terriers this season.
