Villa had an early chance when Andreas Weimann collected the ball in the Hull box but struck wide from 12 yards.
Ahmed Elmohamady then sent in a cross that found Danny Graham, but Ron Vlaar did just enough to prevent the striker from scoring.
Villa broke and Gabby Agbonlahor had a decent effort saved after skipping past a couple of Hull defenders.
Weimann was then guilty of squandering another chance inside the penalty area after Hull had failed to clear a Villa corner.
Good work from Sone Aluko won the hosts a corner, but Villa were able to deal with the ball.
The best that Hull could muster after that was a 25-yard shot from Tom Huddlestone that was held by Brad Guzan.
