Ipswich Town injury news: Tractor Boys attacker suffers "serious" injury in Liverpool defeat

Ipswich Town head coach Kieran McKenna explains that the knee injury suffered by Wes Burns during the defeat at Liverpool on Saturday afternoon appears to be serious.

Ipswich Town have suffered a major injury blow in the form of Wes Burns.

The winger started the Tractor Boys' Premier League clash with Liverpool on Saturday afternoon at Anfield, where the visitors were looking to spring an almighty surprise.

Despite finding the back of the net late on through centre-back Jacob Greaves, Ipswich were sentenced to a heavy defeat on Merseyside, losing 4-1.

Cody Gakpo bagged a brace against Kieran McKenna's men on the afternoon, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah also found the net for Arne Slot's troops.

There was an early change in the contest for Ipswich, with 30-year-old Burns forced off after just 29 minutes, replaced by Ben Johnson on the right flank.

"A serious one" - McKenna provides worrying Burns update

While going into a challenge with Dutchman Gakpo, Ipswich star Burns appeared to 'pop' his knee, an action often associated with an ACL injury.

The Welshman was stretchered off the pitch in agony and was seen leaving Anfield at the end of the match wearing a knee brace, assisted by crutches.

Asked about the injury to Burns post-match, Ipswich boss McKenna said: "Not good. It wasn't an impact, it was a movement.

"We've got our fingers crossed, but the knee is very swollen and he's on crutches. He'll be going for a scan. We hope that's it's not as bad as it looks, but it does look like a serious one."

During his first-ever season in the Premier League, Burns has made 18 appearances for the Tractor Boys, providing an assist for Omari Hutchinson's goal during the draw with Manchester United in November.

How long will Burns be out for?

If Burns has suffered an ACL injury, it is expected that he will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign, ruling him out of 15 Premier League matches.

There is also the chance that the 30-year-old will not recover in time for the start of the next season, when the Tractor Boys could be plying their trade back in the Championship.

McKenna's men are currently occupying 19th spot in the Premier League table, a single point behind Leicester City in the relative comfort of 17th.
