Ipswich Town ease past Huddersfield Town

Ipswich Town beat Huddersfield Town to move within two points of a playoff place.

Ipswich Town have moved to within two points of a playoff place with a 2-0 win away to Huddersfield Town in the Championship on Tuesday night.

The away side flew out of the blocks and were comfortably the better team in the opening stages, and could have gone ahead inside five minutes but, from Daryl Murphy's cross, Paul Anderson's header was saved by Alex Smithies.

They did not have to wait long, however, for the opening goal. It was Anderson again who caused problems, before this time managing to curl an effort past Smithies and into the far corner.

It took until nearly the quarter-hour mark for the Terriers to have their first sight of goal, but when it did arrive Nahki Wells slashed his strike well over the bar.

Anderson could have added a second with 10 minutes of the half to play as he tested Smithies, before Murphy did what his teammate could not with a close-range poked finish after the ball was headed on towards him.

After the interval the game restarted with a similar pattern of Ipswich play. Anderson had another chance on the counter after being found by Luke Hyam, but this time he could not get enough curl on his effort and shot wide.

With just a quarter of an hour left Huddersfield had their best chance of the game to get right back in the contest, with Danny Ward being left free at the back post. However, he could only turn his header over the bar as his side slumped to defeat.
