League One roundup: Leyton Orient move top

Leyton Orient move top of League One on goals scored ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers after both secured victories this afternoon.

Leyton Orient moved top of League One on goals scored ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers by beating Swindon Town 2-0 at Brisbane Road today.

Lloyd James struck two penalties in either half for the Londoners to seal victory for Russell Slade's men.

Meanwhile, Wolves thumped fellow promotion hopefuls Brentford 3-0 to reach the same number of points and identical goal difference as Orient.

James Henry fired the West Midlands outfit into a 1-0 half-time lead, before Michael Jacobs struck twice in the final 15 minutes to seal the win and end the Bees' 19-game unbeaten streak in the process.

Consequently, Brentford slip outside the automatic promotion places and sit just six points clear of fourth-placed Preston North End, who recorded a 2-1 win away to Colchester United.

Jabo Ibehre struck on 58 minutes for United to cancel out Tom Clarke's first-half opener. However, Brian Wilson converted the ball into his own net eight minutes from the end to seal the points for the Lilywhites.

Elsewhere, Peterborough United consolidated their playoff spot with a slender 1-0 win away to bottom-placed Stevenage.

Nicky Ajose's 76th-minute winner proved the difference between both sides as Posh move remain sixth in the standings, five points clear of Walsall after the Saddlers slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to Crawley Town.

Matt Tubbs scored in either half before Sam Mantom reduced the arrears on 64 minutes but, despite the best efforts of Dean Smith's men, they failed in their attempts to draw level.

Relegation-threatened Notts County and Shrewsbury Town played out the afternoon's most entertaining encounter, with Salop recovering from a two-goal deficit to beat the Magpies 3-2 at Meadow Lane.

Shaun Derry's men sat two points clear of Town in the drop zone prior to kickoff and looked good to extend that lead to five after Jack Grealish and Alan Sheehan fired County ahead after 13 minutes.

However, a Jon Taylor goal, coupled with the dismissal of James Spencer prior to half time handed the visitors the impetus necessary to produce a comeback in the second half.

Taylor levelled matters on 67 minutes before David McAllister struck three minutes later as Michael Jackson's men earned a valuable victory in their battle to remain in the division.
