Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam admits that he cannot afford to rest on his laurels.

Charlie Adam has admitted that he faces a "battle" to ensure that he is consistently selected in Liverpool's starting lineup.

The midfielder was praised for his performance during Sunday's victory at Chelsea, a game in which he had a hand in both goals that the Reds scored.

Despite the plaudits, Adam has insisted that he cannot afford to rest on his laurels.

"There are top international players in every position here," said the 25-year-old. "It means you know you have a battle just to get your place.

"As a footballer that's what you want, big challenges and hopefully I can keep challenging for a place.

"When you get a chance to come to a club like this, it's the reward for all the years of hard work you've put in. I want to continue working hard, stay in the team and perform as well as I can."

The Scottish international joined Liverpool during the summer from Championship club Blackpool.
