John Aldridge: 'Steven Gerrard should play in advanced role'

Liverpool legened John Aldridge feels that Steven Gerrard would score more goals for the Reds if he was played in a more advanced role.

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has called on manager Brendan Rodgers to allow Steven Gerrard more freedom to play further up the field.

Gerrard is used predominantly as a central midfielder under Rodgers, but Aldridge believes that the captain would add more goals to the side if he were encouraged to get forward more.

"I'd love to see him given a bit more leeway to link up with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge," Aldridge wrote in his column in the Liverpool Echo.

"Imagine those two football brains with Stevie's imagination and talent behind them. With a triangle like that at the top end of the pitch you really would be talking.

"We need Steven to score more goals, and the way we're playing at the moment is stopping him from getting in and around the opposition penalty area as much."

Gerrard scored his 99th Premier League goal in the Reds' 3-1 win against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
