Stewart Downing targets consistency

Stewart Downing believes that he can achieve a positive run of form for Liverpool following his goal against Stoke City.

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing believes that he has the ability to stay in form and keep a regular spot in Kenny Dalglish's starting lineup.

The former Aston Villa player has had a mismatched start to his career at Anfield, which has prompted criticism and occasional spots on the substitutes' bench.

Despite a difficult start, the England international believes that he can contribute to the Merseyside club following his winning goal against Stoke City in the Carling Cup quarter-final on Sunday.

"I feel as if I have been good since that win against Cardiff," said Downing. "Now I just want to keep playing well and stay in the team because with the competition for places you have to do well.

"This is a bit of a transition time for the club. It's the manager's first full season but I think we have done ever so well. We have had criticism at times but we have taken it on the chin."

While Liverpool have been enjoying a positive run in the domestic cups, the Reds still remain ten points adrift of fourth place in the Premier League.
