Gerard Houllier backs Steven Gerrard to become a "great manager"

Gerard Houllier believes that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will one day make a "great" manager.

Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier believes that Steven Gerrard will make a "great" manager one day.

The Reds captain, who played under Houllier for six years, will represent Liverpool at Anfield for the final time when his side take on Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.

Gerrard will close the curtain on a 17-year senior career at Liverpool away to Stoke City on May 24, before joining up with MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy in July.

The 34-year-old has expressed a desire to one day return to Liverpool when he retires from playing, and Houllier believes that the ex-England skipper is destined for management.

"He will make a great manager because he has always put the team first," Houllier told BBC Sport. "He has got everything it takes to think about the team, the club and the development of others."

Gerrard is expected to receive a guard of honour from both Liverpool and Palace players this weekend.
