James McArthur says that he understands why Liverpool are interested in Roberto Martinez but is hopeful that his manager will stay with Wigan Athletic.

Wigan Athletic midfielder James McArthur has expressed his desire for manager Roberto Martinez to stay at the DW Stadium, despite an approach from Liverpool.

The Spaniard is reportedly expected to fly to America this week for an interview in Boston with Liverpool owner John W Henry over becoming the club's new manager.

The approach from the Merseyside club comes after Martinez managed to lead his Latics side to safety, despite fears of relegation throughout the season.

"A lot of people wrote us off and said we'd be going down but our manager kept believing in the players and we kept believing as a team," McArthur told the Daily Record.

"I reckon it was down to him being so calm. A lot of managers would have shown the stress as the relegation pressure mounted but he is so calm and that feeling rubbed off on us.

"He is an outstanding manager and there's a chance more teams will come in for him if he doesn't go to Liverpool but hopefully it won't be this year."

McArthur committed his future to the North West club by signing a two-year extension at the club.
