Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insists that skipper Steven Gerrard is crucial to his long-term plans at the club.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that captain Steven Gerrard is still an "integral" part of his plans at the club.

The England international underwent shoulder surgery at the end of last season and is expected to be fit for the start of the new campaign.

"He's 33 now but Steven is still an integral part of what I'm trying to do here and will be for the next few years," Rodgers told the club's official website.

"He had his operation towards the end of the season and the plan was for him to continue his rehab over the off-season.

"It's a big credit to him - he's worked tirelessly over the summer. He won't be too far away. He looks great and is in great condition."

Gerrard made 46 appearances last season for Liverpool in all competitions.
