Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers believes that playing for the Reds will boost Simon Mignolet's chances of ousting Thibaut Courtois to become Belgium number one.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers believes that Simon Mignolet's arrival at the club will help his push to become Belgium number one.

The 24-year-old joined the Reds last week for a fee in the region of £11m from Sunderland.

Rodgers feels that playing week in and week out at Anfield will help him oust current Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois ahead of the World Cup next year.

He told the club's official website: "We've brought in Simon Mignolet, who's one of the top young goalkeepers in Europe - he's shown that at Sunderland over the last few years.

"He's got great stature and I think he was player of the season at Sunderland and I really think he can improve on that talent.

"He's part of the Belgian set-up and it's really their golden era of players so him coming here will hopefully increase his opportunities there also."

Mignolet played in every Premier League game for Sunderland last season.
