Brendan Rodgers believes that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has shown maturity and selflessness to help steward a young Reds squad this season.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has declared that Steven Gerrard is doing a "terrific" job helping him lead a young side.

Gerrard has scored just two goals this season but has created more chances in the Premier League than any other player bar Leighton Baines.

Rodgers believes that Gerrard has shown maturity to adapt his role for the benefit of the team and provide an example to a relatively inexperienced squad.

He told The Mirror: "He has been brilliant, I have to say. He's done terrific for us with the younger players, by taking on even more responsibility than he has always done.

"This is a much younger group, and they are still learning, and I think that is one of the biggest things in our progress this year, that the youngsters are able to look up to Steven and learn from his incredible example.

"I think there is probably a bit more responsibility on him, in relation to looking out more for the team, and I am so happy to have someone like that in the group because he is a phenomenal player and a great presence for us."

The 32-year-old is the only member of the Reds squad to play every minute of their 16 league games so far this season.
