Barcelona reportedly eye a surprise January swoop for Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren.

Barcelona are reportedly preparing a January swoop for Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren.

The Spanish champions are believed to be in the market for a new centre-back due to the fact that Samuel Umtiti and Thomas Vermaelen are both facing extended spells on the sidelines.

Ajax's Matthijs de Ligt, Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld and Zenit St Petersburg's Branislav Ivanovic have all been linked with mid-season switches to Camp Nou.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have now set their sights on Lovren, who impressed in Croatia's run to the final of the 2018 World Cup and could be available in early 2019.

The 29-year-old has struggled for fitness this season, starting just one Premier League match.

Lovren's current contract with Liverpool will expire at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.
