Liverpool are reportedly preparing to rival Manchester City for the signature of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong next year.
The 24-year-old's future at Camp Nou is currently being called into question, with the Catalan giants thought to be open to a sale amid their financial problems.
A recent report claimed that Man City had approached Barcelona with a €90m (£75m) bid for the Netherlands international, who has again been a key player for this La Liga club this term.
However, according to International Business Times, Liverpool are also keen to bring the midfielder to the Premier League either in January or during next summer's transfer window.
The report claims that the Reds view De Jong as the ideal replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who left Anfield last summer to join Paris Saint-Germain.
The Dutchman has scored nine times and registered 14 assists in 106 appearances for Barcelona since making the move from Ajax in the summer of 2019.
