The visitors were first to carve out a chance when, nine minutes in, Pablo Piatti's corner was nodded just wide by Aymen Abdennour.
Piatti was involved again in the 18th minute, the Argentine collecting Alexandre Lacazette's charged-down effort and firing towards goal, but Anthony Lopes pulled off a reflex save to keep the ball out.
Just before the half-hour mark Daniel Parejo gave a free kick away in a good position, which Mathieu Valbuena opted to take, but the resulting ball was kept out by Jaume Domenech's emphatic diving save.
With just three minutes to go in the first half, Piatti played a pass over to Sofiane Feghouli, who edged himself into space before unleashing a ferocious shot just outside the box which cannoned off the post and into the net for what turned out to be the game's winning goal.

It was all Lyon after the break, with Lacazette, Jordan Ferri and Corentin Tolisso all getting good opportunities to threaten Domenech, but the visitors repelled all that was thrown at them.
Christophe Jallet was next to threaten as he latched on to Aldo Kalulu's ball in the 64th minute, but despite finding himself unmarked inside the box, the 31-year-old right-back blazed well over the bar.
Ultimately Lyon could not get themselves back in the game as Valencia were able to hold on until full time and secure all three points in France.
The result sees the Spanish side sit second in Group H with three points from two games, while the Ligue 1 outfit sit third with one point from two.
