FC Koln settle for Mainz 05 draw

FC Koln and Mainz 05 both make it three games unbeaten in the Bundesliga in a frustrating goalless draw.

FC Koln and Mainz 05 have extended their respective unbeaten runs to three games by playing out a goalless draw at RheinEnergieStadion.

On a forgettable afternoon, it was the hosts who created the better opportunities and they should have been ahead in the early stages when Philipp Hosiner fired wide after being picked out by Matthias Lehmann.

Unsurprisingly, it was Yunus Malli who carried the biggest threat for Mainz at the opposite end, with a trademark run ending with the attacker curling just past the post.

However, it was the home side who continued to look favourites to break the deadlock, and the lead would have belonged to them had Kevin Vogt not miscued an effort wide from 12 yards out.

The best chance of the afternoon fell to Anthony Modeste inside the first five minutes of the second half as the French striker found the space to connect with Lehmann's cross, but Loris Karius pushed his header to safety.

It was Mainz who started to enjoy more of the ball as the second half progressed, but a lack of creativity ensured that clear chances remained a rarity.

Simon Zoller threatened to snatch the win for the hosts with a long-range strike late on, but his effort drifted just wide of the target as the two sides settled for a point.
