Preview: Mallorca vs. Cadiz - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's La Liga clash between Mallorca and Cadiz, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

On Wednesday, Mallorca and Cadiz will face off in a rescheduled La Liga contest after the original meeting was postponed due to Vedat Muriqi's call-up to the Kosovo squad.

Mallorca, who occupy 17th position, are currently just one point above the drop zone, while 16th-placed Cadiz are only one point better off than their opponents.

Match preview

After achieving a ninth-placed finish last term, Mallorca's third consecutive season in the top flight looks set to result in a relegation fight, having won just one of their 13 league matches (D6, L6).

Their only win of the campaign took place in the middle of September when Muriqi scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory over struggling Celta Vigo.

Since getting the better of Rafael Benitez's side, Los Piratas have had to endure an eight-game winless run, which includes a narrow 1-0 loss in Saturday's clash with Atletico Madrid, ensuring that Javier Aguirre's charges have now gone four league matches without finding the net.

With just nine points to their name after 13 matches, Mallorca will be desperate to claim maximum points in Wednesday's contest, but that could prove difficult, as the hosts are one of three sides yet to win a home La Liga game this season.

If Los Piratas are in need of some inspiration, they can look to their recent head-to-head record at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, having won each of their last three home meetings with Wednesday's opponents.

Like their opponents, Cadiz are hoping to end their very own winless run after failing to record a victory in any of their last nine league matches since beating Villarreal 3-1 on September 1.

The Andalusian side will be particularly concerned by the fact that they have lost five of their previous six matches, including Sunday's difficult home clash with Real Madrid, where a Rodrygo brace and a Jude Bellingham effort condemned Sergio Gonzalez's side to a 3-0 defeat.

While they would have been disappointed to concede three goals, it is actually the other end of the pitch where Cadiz are really struggling, having failed to find the net in seven of their 13 league games, and with just 10 league goals to their name this season, they are currently the lowest scorers in the top flight.

After playing at home on Sunday, Cadiz will head on their travels for Wednesday's encounter, as they look to end an 11-game winless away league run, which stretches back to April.

With their last nine away games against Mallorca producing two draws and seven defeats, Cadiz will be looking to record an away win over Las Piratas for the first time since September 1987.

Team News

Mallorca's Abdon celebrates scoring their second goal with Giovanni Gonzalez on September 26, 2023© Reuters

While the fixture may have been rescheduled due to Muriqi's international call-up, Mallorca will be unable to call upon their main striker after he sustained a calf injury in Kosovo's 1-0 win over Israel earlier this month.

Defender Jose Copete is likely to start a second straight game in a back five, which is also expected to feature Giovanni Gonzalez, Martin Valjent, Matija Nastasic and Toni Lato.

Canada international Cyle Larin, who made a substitute appearance at the weekend, could be brought into the side to operate in a front two alongside Abdon Prats.

As for the visitors, they are still unable to call upon the injured trio of Luis Hernandez, Rominigue Kouame and Gonzalo Escalante.

Fede San Emeterio is closing in on a return to action following two months on the sidelines, but Wednesday's contest may come too soon for the Cadiz midfielder.

Goalkeeper David Gil is waiting in the wings if Conan Ledesma is unable to take part after being forced off against Real Madrid, and the shot-stopper will have to be assessed alongside Chris Ramos, who also picked up an injury issue at the weekend.

Mallorca possible starting lineup:
Rajkovic; Gonzalez, Valjent, Nastasic, Copete, Lato; Sanchez, Darder, Costa; Larin, Prats

Cadiz possible starting lineup:
Gil; Carcelen, Chust, Hernandez, Pires; Navarro, Fernandez, Alcaraz, Machis; Marti, Guardiola

We say: Mallorca 1-1 Cadiz

With both teams finding wins hard to come by, we expect Wednesday's contest to be a cagey affair between two sides separated by just one point.

Having failed to win any of their last 11 league games, we think that Cadiz may struggle to claim all three points, and with Mallorca's last four La Liga home matches finishing all square, we believe that the midweek encounter will produce another draw.
