Fernandinho agrees to stay at Manchester City for a ninth season after signing a one-year contract extension, according to a report.

Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho has reportedly agreed to stay at the club for the 2021-22 season.

The 36-year-old struggled for regular starts under Pep Guardiola last term, but he was lauded for his leadership and exemplary performances en route to the Premier League crown and Champions League final.

Fernandinho's existing deal is due to expire at the end of June, and he was originally included on the Premier League's list of players to be released from their clubs earlier this month.

City were always thought to be confident of keeping Fernandinho on the books, though, and the Daily Mail now claims that the Brazil international will stay on for another 12 months.

The report adds that the club are expected to announce his extension before pre-season training gets underway, and the two parties have also discussed a behind-the-scenes role for the veteran midfielder when he calls time on his playing career.

Fernandinho has scored 24 goals and assisted 30 more in 350 appearances for Man City, winning four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and six EFL Cups since arriving in 2013.
