Italian Nicola Rizzoli will referee England's Euro 2012 opener against France.
The Serie A official has 10 years' experience working at club level, but has never served in a major international tournament before.
Rizzoli oversaw Fulham's Europa League final defeat to Atletico Madrid in 2010, back when England manager Roy Hodgson was coaching the Cottagers.
He also made headlines in the Champions League that year, sending off Manchester United's Rafael da Silva in their defeat to Bayern Munich.
England take on France on Monday (June 11) afternoon.
