Paul Scholes slams 'shambolic' Manchester United

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes labels his former club a "shambles" following their 2-0 Europa League defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has launched a scathing attack on his former club following their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield this evening.

Goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino saw the hosts put one foot in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, and it could have been worse for United had David de Gea not pulled off a string of important saves.

In contrast, United barely created a chance of their own, and Scholes believes that the standards set over the years of success at the club are not being met by the current crop of players.

"United were a shambles. At 2-0 they're still in the game, but when you're at Man Utd I think there are certain standards you have to live up to, and I think they're falling well short," he told BT Sport.

"When we were coming through as players we had great examples in [Bryan] Robson, [Roy] Keane, [Paul] Ince, [Steve] Bruce setting standards, and when we came through we had to live up to those standards and hopefully take the club on.

"When we were playing we set standards for these players. [Sir Alex Ferguson] set standards for David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, and every single one of them have fallen short of the standards that should be set."

The second leg will take place at Old Trafford next Thursday.
