Michael Carrick will be in charge of Manchester United 'for forthcoming games' while the club look to bring in an interim manager for the remainder of the 2021-22 campaign.

The Red Devils confirmed on Sunday morning that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been sacked as head coach, with the 4-1 loss at Watford on Saturday proving to be his final match in charge.

There had been suggestions that technical director Darren Fletcher would be placed in control, with Carrick assisting the Scot.

However, Man United have confirmed that Carrick will be in charge of first-team affairs for the moment, with a permanent replacement for Solskjaer not expected to be appointed until the end of the season.

Mike Phelan and Kieran McKenna are also remaining at the club, with Solskjaer the only departure.

Set-piece coach Eric Ramsay and first-team coach Martyn Pert have also stayed on, with Man United reluctant to make major changes to their staff while the managerial situation is unclear.

Carrick's first game in charge of the team will be the Champions League clash with Villarreal on Tuesday, which comes ahead of a Premier League game at Chelsea next weekend.
