Manchester United veteran Michael Carrick is to retire at the end of the season and join the club's coaching staff.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick will retire at the end of the season and join the club's coaching setup.

The 36-year-old, who has not featured for the Red Devils since experiencing an irregular heart rhythm in September, will become part of manager Jose Mourinho's backroom team in the summer.

"The club would be very happy for him to do that. I would be very happy also for him to do that," BBC Sport quotes Mourinho as saying. "I expect him to join.

"[He had] a few months without even training so now he is in his second week of training with the team. He is a very important player for us.

"I think it is a good decision for the team and a good decision for him to finish playing football and not injured or with some problem."

Carrick, who has not played for United since turning out in their 4-1 victory over Burton Albion in the EFL Cup, has been undergoing treatment to help normalise his heart rhythm.

The veteran midfielder has won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League and the Club World Cup since joining the Red Devils from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006.
