Michael Carrick confident Manchester United can 'challenge' under Louis van Gaal

Michael Carrick is confident that Manchester United have a good enough squad to challenge for honours under new manager Louis van Gaal next season.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes that there is enough talent in the squad to challenge for honours under manager Louis van Gaal next season.

The Red Devils, who sacked former boss David Moyes in April less than 10 months after appointing the Scot, finished seventh in the Premier League last season.

This term, the former English champions will have Van Gaal at the helm when he leaves his position as Netherlands boss following their World Cup campaign in Brazil.

"I'm looking forward to working with him," Carrick told Sky Sports News. "I'm looking forward to meeting him and getting cracking really.

"Looking back it was a disappointing campaign but we have got to learn from it, never stop learning, and take what we can.

"We have still certainly got enough quality in the squad anyway regardless of who is coming in this summer to be up there challenging again."

United have already acquired the signatures of midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao and left-back Luke Shaw from Southampton.
