Manchester United's Michael Carrick: 'We can't afford slow start'

Michael Carrick insists that Manchester United need to start strongly in their 2013-14 Premier League campaign.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has insisted that the club need to get off to winning ways swiftly at the start of the 2013-14 Premier League campaign.

The English champions, who are currently on the Australian leg of their pre-season tour, will face Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in their first five games.

"We can't afford a slow start this year so these few weeks [on tour] are vital for us," Sky Sports News quotes Carrick as saying.

"We have touched on the start to the season we have, and it's important we're ready for that."

United lost their opening pre-season fixture 1-0 to a Singha All Star XI in Bangkok.
