David de Gea hits out at "stupid" criticism

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea claims that recent criticism of his form for club and country has been "stupid".

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has claimed that criticism of his form in recent months has been "stupid".

The Spain international's performances during this summer's World Cup were questioned following a string of uncharacteristic mistakes, while he was also short of his best during the opening weeks of the Premier League season.

However, De Gea was instrumental during United's 2-1 win over the previously-unbeaten Watford on Saturday afternoon, and the shot-stopper insists that he pays little heed to his critics.

"Normally I never listen to the people who speak about me. I never listen to the stupid things they say," De Gea told reporters at a press conference.

"Normally I focus on my job and focus on trying to help my team and trying to improve every training session and try to be as a good as I can.

"I feel really loved by the fans and all the people who work for this club. I am really happy to play for this club, one of best clubs in world, so for me it's really good to be part of this club."

De Gea saved four shots on target against Watford - the same number as he managed in his previous three Premier League games combined.
