Alex Ferguson hails "brilliant" Louis van Gaal

Manchester United icon Sir Alex Ferguson praises Louis van Gaal for "clearing the decks" at Old Trafford in a "brilliant" start to life as Red Devils manager.

Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on Louis van Gaal for a "brilliant" start to life as Manchester United boss.

The Dutchman "cleared the decks" and welcomed £150m worth of talent to replace those who he deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

United have since recovered from their early-season woes and won three of their last four Premier League outings - as well as winning the approval of the legendary manager.

"Louis van Gaal has made a lot of changes and, thinking about that, actually maybe he's doing the right thing, to clear the decks and build his own team," Ferguson, who won 13 league titles with the club, told MUTV.

"Because he's got the experience and coaching ability to do that. The way he's approached it I think has been brilliant."

The 72-year-old won 38 trophies for the Red Devils in total before calling time on his 26-year United career in 2013.
