Mark Hughes: 'Stoke City should have been given two penalties'

Stoke City Mark Hughes believes that his side were denied two clear penalties in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Mark Hughes has claimed that Stoke City should have been given two penalties in Thursday's 1-1 draw with Manchester United at the Britannia Stadium.

Chris Smalling appeared to handle the ball when he attempted to block Peter Crouch's header, before Geoff Cameron went down under a challenge from Phil Jones later in the second half as he looked to score from close range.

The Potters boss believes that his side deserved to collect all three points, and he argued that the incidents had a big say on the final result.

"We had two clear penalty claims from our point of view which should have been given," the Stoke boss told reporters. "The first one, I think Smalling has lost Peter on the initial header and is just trying to get something on the ball.

"It was a goal-bound header and he has made an intentional movement with his arm to bat the ball down. The referee is clearly standing there, five yards away, so why he hasn't given it I don't know.

"When we hit the post from Peter's header it has come back out and Geoff Cameron has been taken out. If you look at those two situations - and other opportunities for ourselves - overall, on chances created, we were the better team."

Stoke return to action against Wrexham in the FA Cup on Sunday.
