Ronald Koeman: 'Man United have to be fighting for titles after £150m spree'

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman believes that Manchester United should be fighting for the Premier League table given that they spent around £150m on players.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has suggested that Manchester United have no excuses not to be fighting for the Premier League title due to the millions spent during the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils spent around £150m in preparation for Louis van Gaal's first season in charge at Old Trafford.

The team are currently nine points below leaders Chelsea in the Premier League table, and while Van Gaal has played down his side's chances of winning the title, Koeman believes that league glory should be their main target.

"They have great players so it's normal that they will fight for titles," Koeman told reporters. "They have to. How you can spend that money, how can you sign that kind of players, and not be fighting to win titles?

"Everything is up to Manchester United. They have a very successful coach, they have great players, they have money, they have great fans, a great stadium. It's normal that you win titles."

Southampton, who lost 2-1 to United at St Mary's last month, will take on Van Gaal's side at Old Trafford on Sunday.
