Chris Smalling: 'Manchester United can close gap on leaders'

Chris Smalling believes that the current mood in the Manchester United squad will push them on to challenge Chelsea and Manchester City this season.

Chris Smalling has claimed that Manchester United's team spirit will help them catch their rivals at the top of the Premier League table.

Louis van Gaal's side are currently nine points behind Chelsea and Manchester City, who are level on 46 points after 20 games, but Smalling believes that United's recent improvement in the league gives them the confidence required to close the gap.

"I think we've really shown our team spirit in games where we've had to dig in or come from behind," the centre-back told members of the media. "It shows how well we all get on.

"We're all happy no matter what position we're in and we work for each other.

"If we can prolong our consistency and continue our hard work in training, things will click and we'll creep up the league."

United will look to extend their 10-game unbeaten run in the Premier League when they host Southampton on Sunday afternoon.
