Manchester United reportedly make a breakthrough in contract negotiations with goalkeeper David de Gea.

Manchester United have reportedly made a breakthrough in contract negotiations with David de Gea.

De Gea still has 18 months left to run on his existing contract, but United are desperate to sign the Spain international to a new long-term deal as soon as possible.

The player's future was the subject of much speculation while Jose Mourinho was in charge of the Red Devils, but the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in December has seen a complete change in mood at the club.

According to Metro, United are becoming increasingly confident that the stopper will soon sign a new long-term contract worth in the region of £375,000 a week.

De Gea joined United from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, and the 28-year-old has made 345 appearances in all competitions for the 20-time English champions.

The Spaniard has only kept five Premier League clean sheets this season, though, with United struggling at the back despite their improvement in recent weeks.
