Jose Mourinho: 'Sir Alex Ferguson knew I would have said no to Man United'

Jose Mourinho says that Sir Alex Ferguson knew not to offer him the Manchester United job because he already had his heart set on returning to Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has suggested that he would have turned down becoming Sir Alex Ferguson's successor at Manchester United in order to return to Stamford Bridge.

The Portuguese coach began his second spell as Chelsea boss in 2013, not long after Ferguson stepped down from his role at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has now claimed that he was not offered the United job because Ferguson knew that his heart was set on returning to West London.

"Every manager in the world looks at Man United as a huge club but I wanted to come to Chelsea," Mourinho said in an interview for a BBC documentary.

"We didn't bring that to the table because we were so open and he knows so much about myself that he knew that for almost a season, I want to leave Real Madrid and I want to come to Chelsea."

David Moyes replaced Ferguson in the end, but lasted just nine months before he was dismissed and Louis van Gaal took the reins.
