Wayne Rooney reportedly wants Manchester United to publicly state that he didn't ask to leave the club as he fears a backlash from supporters.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is reportedly concerned that he will face a backlash from the club's supporters as his future remains in doubt.

The 27-year-old is said to have asked to leave the Premier League champions before the end of the season, prior to Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement announcement.

It is understood that Rooney is open to staying at Old Trafford, but wants the club to publicly acknowledge that he did not ask to leave the club, according to The Express.

The England international is expected to meet new manager David Moyes for face-to-face talks today.
