Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has defended his goal tally for the Red Devils, claiming that his duties lay elsewhere on the pitch.

Keane registered 51 goals in 480 appearances for United across all competitions, with his best goalscoring season in the Premier League coming in the 1995-96 campaign, where he netted six times in 29 outings.

When asked if he should have contributed more goals to the team, Keane told Sky Sports News: "No, absolutely not. It was not my job [to score goals]. My job was to make sure we did not lose games and won league titles.

"I scored plenty early in my career, so I thought, 'I have done that bit of the game, I will focus on sitting in front of the back four and dictating the game'.

"I scored plenty in training but [come match day] I left that to the strikers and people like Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham, who were keen to get forward."

Keane won seven Premier League titles with United between 1993 and 2005.
