Edwin van der Sar reveals that he spoke with Robin van Persie before his switch to United, offering advice on every aspect of the club.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has revealed that he spoke with Robin van Persie before his £24m move to Old Trafford.

Van Persie, who has made an impressive start to his United career, sought advice on the clubs that were in for him.

The ex-United shotstopper was only too happy to oblige and admits that a move to Old Trafford was always in the 29-year-old's thoughts.

"He called me up and said a few clubs were in for him, but because I played for two of them, United and Juventus, he wanted to hear my thoughts," Van der Sar told The Telegraph.

"We spoke for five minutes about Juventus and 55 minutes about United. He wanted to know how good they were, what he would find there, what were the players like, what was [Alex] Ferguson like, how they train.

"He has shown he has quality already. I read a statement from Ryan Giggs saying that United have signed good players in the past but Van Persie has everything."

The Dutch legend thinks that the new fire-power could give United the edge in the Premier League.

He continued: "Can Van Persie play with Rooney? I think that's why the manager bought them. They obviously won't play every game but I think Sir Alex is happy with the fire-power he has.

"United lost the league by a couple of goals last season and I don't think the manager wants to see that happen again."

Van Persie faces a late fitness test ahead of United's next game. They face Wigan Athletic at home in the Premier League later today.
