How Manchester United could line up against Brighton & Hove Albion

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester United could line up for Saturday's Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

Manchester United travel to the Amex Stadium on Saturday to face Brighton & Hove Albion looking for their first points of the new Premier League season.

The Red Devils slumped to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace in their opening match of the 2020-21 campaign last weekend as former winger Wilfried Zaha came back to haunt his old side with a brace.

United did pick up their first win of the season by beating Luton Town in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, but they take on a Brighton side that has won three games in a row without conceding across all competitions.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could set his side out for the contest.

For all the doom and gloom surrounding United's season-opening loss to Crystal Palace, there was the positive of Donny van de Beek coming off the bench to score a debut goal for the Red Devils.

As the club's only signing of a largely frustrating window it is inevitable that there will be more scrutiny on the Dutchman until more players arrive, and he could make his first Premier League start this weekend.

Where he plays is a puzzle which needs to be figured out, though; in midweek he started in the number 10 role, but Bruno Fernandes is expected to return to the XI for this match which could force Van de Beek into a deeper role alongside Paul Pogba.

How that affects the balance of Solskjaer's team remains to be seen, with the Norwegian usually preferring a more traditional defence-minded midfielder such as Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic or Fred alongside Pogba.

Further forward, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood are among the players expected to return to the starting XI after both coming off the bench to score late on against Luton in midweek.

Anthony Martial will also lead the line in place of Odion Ighalo, while Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof are likely to come back into the defensive line.

David de Gea is also expected to regain the gloves despite conceding three times on the opening day, whereas Dean Henderson kept a clean sheet - including a crucial late save - in the EFL Cup.
