Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips says that Manchester United defender Phil Jones "fits the bill" for West Ham United.

Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips has claimed that Manchester United defender Phil Jones "fits the bill" for West Ham United and has urged the Hammers to move for him in January.

Jones has been left out of United's Premier League and Champions League squads, suggesting that he might have played his last game for the 20-time English champions.

The 28-year-old still two and a half years left to run on his contract at Old Trafford but could be allowed to leave either on loan or on a permanent basis at the start of 2021.

Phillips has said that the Englishman is capable of being "unbelievable" and believes that he would be an ideal signing for the capital club.

"Phil has come under criticism from all quarters over the years and what I liked about him is his attitude," he told Football Insider. "He just gets on with it. He is what it is. At times he will make mistakes but at other times he will be unbelievable.

"For Phil, getting out of United would be the best for him. He needs to go and play somewhere where he feels wanted. Staying in the Premier League will be a priority for him. He could turn out to be a signing for someone that might help them stay in the Premier League or push for Europe.

"You would be getting a player that would want to prove a point after not being named in the Manchester United squad. It looks like David Moyes is looking for English defenders. I know he has signed [Craig] Dawson on loan but Phil Jones fits the bill for them."

Jones, who played under Moyes at Old Trafford, has made 224 appearances for United since arriving from Blackburn Rovers in 2011.
