Manchester United 'trigger Ashley Young extension'

Manchester United reportedly trigger a 12-month extension in the contract of Ashley Young to keep the 32-year-old at Old Trafford until 2019.

Manchester United have reportedly triggered Ashley Young's 12-month contract extension clause to keep the makeshift full-back at the club until 2019.

Young has spent the vast majority of his season in an unfamiliar left-back role, but his performances in that position have led to him being recalled to the England squad for the upcoming friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy.

The 32-year-old has been preferred to more natural left-backs such as Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo, making 29 appearances for the club across all competitions this season.

Young's previous deal was due to expire this summer, but the Daily Mail reports that United have now taken up the option to extend that contract by a further year.

The Red Devils are also understood to be open to the idea of offering Young a new deal on even longer terms should he continue to impress for Jose Mourinho's side.

However, Mourinho is reportedly in the market for a new left-back this summer, with Chelsea's Marcos Alonso the latest to be linked with a move to Old Trafford.
