Mourinho: 'Shaw will be offered new deal'

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho confirms that Luke Shaw will be offered a new contract at the club, despite making only six league starts this season.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Luke Shaw will be offered a new contract at the club and expects the full-back to stay at Old Trafford "for years".

Mourinho has regularly clashed with Shaw since the Portuguese manager's arrival at United, publicly questioning the England international's performances, focus and attitude, and usually leaving him out of his starting XI.

The 22-year-old has made only six Premier League starts so far this season, but Mourinho insists that he is "really happy" with Shaw's progress.

"Luke is not about changing my mind, it's just the evolution or no evolution of his potential. It's just about that," Mourinho told reporters.

"I know Shaw since he arrived in the Premier League with Southampton and know his potential and quality. Could he come in my direction, the way I like my players to be, not just on the pitch but during the training week, and make a big effort?

"He's been free of minor injuries for a few months, which sometimes stops the evolution, and I'm really happy. The natural consequence of it is that he will have his contract and he will be a United player for years."

Shaw has made just 33 appearances for United across all competitions since Mourinho took over.
