Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane does not want the Red Devils to keep hold of Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguay international has been in impressive form for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side this season, scoring 12 times and registering five assists in 33 appearances in all competitions.

Man United have been working to convince the 34-year-old to sign a 12-month extension to his existing deal amid suggestions that he is keen to return to South America.

A recent report claimed that Cavani has decided to stay at Old Trafford until next June, but Keane has insisted that his former club need to sign a replacement for the forward.

"I kind of hope that they don't keep him, because then they might look and think 'we don't need to go and get another'. He's 34, if you're hanging your hat on Cavani next year to getting United back to winning league titles, forget about it," Keane told Sky Sports News.

"He'll be a back-up striker and he won't want to be a back-up striker, so that's why he'll be reluctant to sign a new contract and there's obviously family reasons behind it."

Keane later revealed that he wants to see Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane arrive at Old Trafford.
