Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard tells Manchester United that midfielder John McGinn is not for sale.

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has insisted that midfielder John McGinn is not for sale amid suggestions of interest from Manchester United.

The Scotland international has again been in strong form for Villa during the 2021-22 campaign, making 18 appearances in all competitions, scoring three times and contributing two assists.

A recent report claimed that Man United were planning to move for McGinn during this summer's transfer window, with senior figures at Old Trafford impressed by him.

However, Gerrard has insisted that the 27-year-old will not be leaving Villa ahead of next season.

"We are certainly not a club that is looking to sell. Our intention is to keep John McGinn here. We don't want to be a selling club unless there is a situation, as with [Jack] Grealish, which works itself out if you like," Gerrard told reporters.

"We want [McGinn] to remain a Villa player and we can't be any clearer on that. We love the player, we love the human being and we want to help him.

"We certainly see it as a compliment when our best players, or any of our players, are linked with big moves away. I think it shows they are playing at a consistent level."

McGinn has scored 16 goals and registered 21 assists in 130 appearances for Villa since joining the club from Hibernian in August 2018.
