Marseille find form to cruise past Nice

Dmitri Payet scores twice as Marseille put in their most impressive performance of the new Ligue 1 season to convincingly beat Nice 4-0 at the Stade Velodrome.

Marseille put in their most impressive performance of the new Ligue 1 season to convincingly beat Nice 4-0 at the Stade Velodrome this evening.

Dimitri Payet scored either side of Florian Thauvin's strike, before Abdel Barrada added a late fourth as the hosts won successive matches, having picked up just one point from their first two games.

Nice had the first clear chance of the contest as Alexy Bosetti shot into the side-netting from a good position, but it was to be all Marseille from that moment as Payet opened the scoring 60 seconds later.

In one of 20 Marseille shots on goal, the former Lille winger beat Mouez Hassan at his near post from inside the area to get Marcelo Bielsa's side off and running on 19 minutes.

Thauvin, who was linked with both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer, twice went close before doubling Marseille's advantage from Andre Ayew's cross a minute before the break.

The home side effectively secured the points three minutes into the second period when Thauvin added an assist to his earlier goal by delivering for Payet to head beyond Hassan from close range.

Steve Mandanda saved comfortably from Bosetti and Niklas Hult, before substitute Barrada capped off a fine Marseille display by tapping in from Romain Alessandrini's 87th-minute square pass.
