Melbourne City hit five past Newcastle Jets to stretch unbeaten run to four

Melbourne City come out on top in a 5-2 contest against Newcastle Jets as Robert Koren nets a hat-trick.

Robert Koren scored a hat-trick as Melbourne City ran rampant against Newcastle Jets to secure a 5-2 triumph and stretch their unbeaten A-League run to four games.

The home side suffered an early blow when City were awarded a penalty after Damien Duff was brought down from behind by Allan Welsh.

Aaron Mooy stepped up to take the spot kick and he was able to blast the ball into the bottom right corner to give the visitors the lead within the opening three minutes of the game.

Before the 10-minute mark, City were 2-0 up when Koren latched onto a stray clearance from Adrian Madaschi to slot the ball into the near post.

Newcastle got a rare sight of goal with a counter-attack down the other end, and Jacob Melling controversially fouled Andrew Hoole just outside the box to give the hosts a free kick, but it eventually came to nothing.

City continued their domination by making it three before half time, with Duff earning his first A-League goal with a low driving shot into the back of the net after a scramble in the box.

After the break, the visitors racked up their tally to four when Koren slotted his second into the net from close range following a low pass from Duff.

City were rampant throughout the game, but Newcastle managed to get onto the scoresheet when Edson Montano's header soared past the goalkeeper and into the goal.

However, a comeback from Newcastle was halted when minutes later Koren wrapped up his hat-trick with a clinical low drive from the centre of the box.

The home side picked up the pace in the final 15 minutes of the encounter as Jeronimo Neumann took advantage of City's sleepy defence to strike from the six-yard box and score.

The late surge was not enough for Newcastle as they continue to search for their second win of the campaign.
