Coronavirus latest: Australia's A-League to continue

Australia's football authorities confirm that the rest of the A-League season will play out behind closed doors over a three to four week period.

Football Federation Australia have confirmed that the rest of the A-League season will be played out behind closed doors.

Most competitive football around the globe has been suspended in recent weeks due to the coronavirus crisis, which has so far claimed more than 6,500 lives.

Two sides competing in the division, Melbourne Victory and New Zealand outfit Wellington Phoenix, are currently in a mandatory 14-day lockdown following their game at the weekend, prompting speculation that the competition might be put on hold.

The FFA have now confirmed that the season will proceed as planned after Wellington agreed to remain in Australia, albeit with a 'compressed schedule' that will see the remaining six matchdays played out over three to four weeks.

"It is our intent to compress the rest of that season," A-League boss Greg O'Rourke said in a press conference. "We think that is a better solution with the facts we have in hand, rather than suspend it and work out what will happen with the health situation in months to come."

Sydney FC currently lead the way in the A-League standings with a 10-point lead at the summit.
